Frequently asked questions

When do I get to choose my kitten?
I will pop soft collars on them around 4 weeks of age. This is when you can pick from photos or videos.
Can I visit you?
You can visit at 8 weeks old once a holding deposit has been place, this is for the health & safety of the kittens and mum under the code of animal welfare rules. Also our family home.
Which Kitty Litter & tray should I get? Are they toilet trained?
Growing up your kitten has been used to wood pellets & I plain flat kitty litter tray. We clean it as soon as they go to the toilet, but you will be able to get away with twice a day or 2 litter trays. We only put a thin layer of wood pellets into the tray.A kitten needs a clean litter tray or else they may want to find a cleaner area to do their business in.We purchase our wood fire start pellets from Mitre10 or Bunnings, as it works out cheaper for our cattery. $13 for a 15kg bag.Put a few trays around the house in corners so they can definitely find the litter, Yes, they are toilet trained and know where our trays are here. You will need to start off in a small area to avoid accidents and show them the litter every hour. This is where a crate comes in handy.
Should we set up an area or crate for them?
We recommend a large dog Crate to put your kitten into while you are introducing them to their new home. You can keep the kitty litter & bed in here while they are kittens. They will feel safe and they will be able to find everything easily like the loo. It’s also a great place to put their fresh food if you have other animals, locking it away from them while your babies eat. Otherwise, you could use a small room or your bedroom. Crates and separate rooms keep them safe from other pets.Plus, it allows you to open your windows when you need a bit of fresh air without worrying about your kitten getting out.
Why won't my kitten eat or go toilet straight away?
After relocating to any home, it can be a bit stressful especially without their siblings. If they don't eat or go toilet in the first 2 days don't worry, they have eaten loads here and also been to the loo. It's very normal.
Are they desexed?
Yes they are desexed, I do not sell entire cats.
How do I put a kitten on hold?
We require a nonrefundable holding deposit to secure your new fur baby. The remaining balance will need to be cleared before picking up your kitten otherwise cash on pick up.
What Insurance should I get? What is your Health Guarantee?
Kitten 12-month health guarantee against any genetic disorders, will be replaced with written confirmation from a vet.
Free 6-week pet insurance from Southern Cross online. Many pet insurance companies offer 6-week free insurance.
Should I get a scratching post? What toys?
I highly recommend getting a good strong sturdy cat scratching post. The ones where they can sit up the top. They love toys, boxes, ripped up bits of paper. Those wand toys are awesome too. Kmart has the best toys.
What beds do they like?
Soft round fluffy beds make a comfy bed for your cat as well as kittens. We put a heater next to them in winter.
What Food do they eat?
Kittens eat "Black Hawk" Kitten Rice & Chicken biscuits. They also eat "Butch Tasti Dinner" from the supermarket fridge pet food area. You are welcome to change their diet after they are 6 months old but it is best to stick to this diet and they will get the runs if you change them dramatically. You will need to feed Butch meat twice a day but always have biscuits on demand and water. If you can't find the butch, Ginger Tom will be fine.Avoid plastic feeding bowls as it causes cat acne.
How do I introduce them to other pets?
Before introducing a kitten to your dog or cat, allow some time for your kitten to settle in their new environment and become comfortable with you. Introduce your kitten to the house slowly and provide a comfortable hiding place for it to retreat to in case they feel threatened at any time. This is why a crate is a good idea. It may take several days before your kitten is confident in their new home. During this time, keep your kitten separated from the other animals. By the time your kitten is comfortable, your dog or cat will have become aware of the presence of a new family member. Introduce pets gradually, always under your direct supervision. The cat could initially be confined in their crate still in their section of the house and you can let the dog/ cat come in the room calmly and have a smell around. Then remove the dog/ cat from the area and let the kitten out of the crate to have a walk around. You can do this until they seem settled and are both comfortable. The crate door could then be left open when you are at home and directly supervising the dog and cat. The kitten will eventually start to come out and gradually become braver. Always let the animals get away from each other if they want to hide, and provide an escape route for both of them. The cat needs escape routes if the dog gets excited and starts running around. Avoid forcing interactions. If you have more than one animal, it is best to introduce each one individually, as your kitten may be overwhelmed if she/he has to respond to both animals at the same time. Do not leave your animals alone together unless you are absolutely certain that they tolerate each other and are all safe.
When can I collect my kitten?
Kittens can be taken home around 11 weeks old, after they have recovered from desexing. Some kittens may take an extra week as they need to be a certain weight for desexing. Please remember to bring a cage to take your baby home in so they don't get spooked and take off.
Are Bengals Hypoallergenic?
There aren’t cats that are fully hypoallergenic, so it is really hard to answer your question with certainty, but Sphynx, Russian Blues, Burmese, Bengals are generally pretty good - in saying that everyone's reactions are different. It depends on what exactly you are allergic to. Some people are allergic to the fur, others the dander/skin oils/protein etc. Some people are ok/adjust with a cat they’ve had since a kitten; others can react anytime. Unfortunately for this reason we don't home them with families that have cat allergies. This has happened with 3 of my kittens in the past. Sadly, for the kittens they had to be rehomed.
When can they go outside? Can they go outside at night?
They can go outside 2 weeks after their final vaccination during the day. However, they will be too little to defend themselves. Ours are not allowed out until they are 6 months old and always supervised while adapting. Even when they are older, I recommend making sure they are inside the house at night. Nighttime is when they seem to get into the most trouble or hit by cars.
Are they Vaccinated?
Yes they had 1 vaccination when they got desexed. Their 2nd vaccine is due 3 weeks after their surgery, the date is in the middle of your vet book. (Get your vet to deworm them at their appointment with Milbemax) Its a good idea to deworm all your animals at the same time.
When should I deworm them? What brand?
We deworm our kittens regularly, with Milbemax. Get your vet to deworm them at the same time they get their vaccination. Its a good idea to deworm all your animals at the same time. This will then be a monthly pill. (Treatment is recorded in the back of their vet book)
Are they Microchipped and how do I register the microchip?
Yes they are and their Microchip number is in the front of your vet book. You need to register their microchip in the Companion Animal Register. www.animalregister.co.nz
